Blackjack Options: Double Down, Split, Surrender
Blackjack is an exciting game that dwells on simplicity. Only a few decisions must be considered when playing blackjack. This is part of the appeal of blackjack, players don't need to learn complex rules to enjoy the game.
The objective of blackjack is for the player to have a better hand (i.e. higher value of the card/s in a player's hand) than the dealer, without exceeding 21. Here are some options available to the player to increase their chances of winning a bigger pot.
The player can double down after first deal is made. Doubling down simply means that the player has the option to increase the player's bet two folds. The catch here is that the player is required to take another card - a single card only - from the dealer.
If the result is a win for the player who doubles down, then that player receives a 2 to 1 payoff on the total sum of the bet which was doubled.
Another option available to the player in the course of a blackjack game is "splitting". A player may split into two a pair which was dealt as the opening cards. These are then considered as two separate hands. In the case of the face cards (Jacks, Queens and Kings), these three are worth 10 each if the player draws a pair and opts to split the hand.
When a player chooses to split a hand, then each hand is considered independent of each other and must be played as such. Also, a bet that is similar to the original one is required to be placed for the other hand.
If the player is again dealt another pair, then the player is again given the option to split. If this happens, then the player will have three hands played independently from each other. In some casinos, doubling down on split hands are permitted.
Another option available to blackjack players is "surrender". This occurs when it is confirmed that the dealer doesn't have a blackjack. In this case, players can take back half their bet if they choose to surrender their current hand.
This is offered mostly in casinos outside America. A variation of this option is called "early surrender". The surrender happens before a blackjack is confirmed as the dealer's hand.
Players are given these extra options to make their game more exciting and rewarding. So next time you play a game of blackjack, make sure you're aware of these options as these can give you a larger pot, or save you some money.
