The Blackjack Player's Options
When playing blackjack, the dealer starts by giving two cards to each player. The dealer then gives himself two cards, one of which is always dealt face down. Winning in blackjack depends on the sum of the cards that you get.
In blackjack, the goal is to get a sum of twenty-one, which will give you the higher payout. If you can't a twenty-one, try to get a sum closer to twenty-one than the sum of the dealer's cards. However, the sum of your cards should not exceed twenty-one.
Getting an ace and a card with a value of ten as your first two cards will give you a blackjack. They payout will be three to two. What if you didn't get a blackjack on the first two cards dealt? Do you lose the game? No. You still have several options.
First is you can choose to hit. To hit means to take an additional card from the deck. In blackjack, it is best to hit when the sum of your cards is very low or far from twenty-one.
You may also choose to stand. When you choose to stand, you just keep your existing cards while the dealer hits or reveals all of his cards. When playing blackjack, it is best to stand when the sum of your cards is very close to twenty-one.
Another option in blackjack is to double down. Doing this means doubling your bet, taking another card and standing after that. Doubling down can increase your payout if you are very sure that taking another card will make you bet the dealer.
You may also decide to split. This can be one of the complicated options in blackjack. This is only possible if your first two cards have the same value. When the cards are split, each of the cards becomes the first card of a new hand. You have to double the bet and take another card.
Another option in the older versions of blackjack is to surrender. When you do this, you may forfeit only half of your wager and give up your existing hand. This is no longer offered as an option in most casinos.
When playing blackjack, you have to consider your options carefully. You should study the probability of getting a card that will make you win against the dealer. This is why being observant and logical thinking is also important when playing blackjack especially when bets are getting higher.
